Sporting vs. Atletico Madrid live stream: Watch Europa League online
Atletico Madrid capitalized on two mistakes made by Sporting defenders to take a commanding lead into the second leg in Lisbon. The Portuguese side will need to win by at least two goals to advance and can not allow Atleti to score an away goal. If Atletico are able to score an away goal, that will likely be enough to seal their place in the semifinals.
In the first leg, Atletico jumped on Sporting early. Diego Costa intercepted a poor clearance and set up Koke for the opening goal less than a minute into the game. In the 40th minute, Sporting’s defense made a second mistake. Saul Niguez gathered the poor clearance and set up Antonie Griezmann, who gave Atletico a 2-0. Madrid held onto the lead, seemed happy to go to Portugal with a two-goal lead.
Porto are third domestically, winning three of their last five games. Jorge Jesus will have to be aggressive with his gameplan if his side are going to come back. The Lisbon side will rely on Bruno Fernandes and Gelson Martins offensively. The two players have combined for 25 goals and 29 assists this season. William Carvalho was subbed off before halftime in the first leg with an injury. The Portuguese international did not play on the weekend and is a question mark going into Thursday’s game. If Carvalho cannot play, his loss will be a major blow to Sporting’s hopes of advancing.
Atletico have struggled in La Liga lately, picking up only seven points in their last five games. Diego Simeone’s side have lost twice in their last five games and draw with Real Madrid on Sunday. Despite dropping points lately, Atleti are still second in La Liga. Simeone will rely on Costa and Griezmann to apply pressure to the Sporting defense and create any offensive. Defensively, Atleti will likely play conservatively and try to hold onto their two-goal lead.

Sporting’s chance of advancing took a big blow in the first leg when Fabio Coentrao and Bas Dost picked up yellow cards. Both players will miss the second leg with a yellow card suspension. The loss of Dost will be extremely difficult for Sporting to overcome. Dost has scored 31 goals in all competitions for Sporting this season.
